k u .co. mind our y think re #IFeelBetterWhen Alison Stewart I have been very impressed by the quality of the work submitted for the competition. There was a high standard of reflection around the topic: ‘I feel better when I am…’ and I felt all those who entered had taken time to explore and think about what makes them feel more positive and connected in life. Many had focused on how to view their circumstances, such as being in prison, with a perspective of looking for situations which made them feel better such as helping others socialising or working to become a better person for the future. I have always found poetry an amazing tool for enabling expression of feeling and thought. The task of searching for ‘the right word’ or phrase sits alongside the writer’s search for an emotional awareness in the writing. My role as Head of Cluster for Milton Keynes College enables me to be a part of many men’s journeys of learning and discovering new creative talents such as creative writing, poetry and Art. Beverley Bradshaw-Smith Bev Bradshaw has worked as a registered general nurse within criminal justice for the past 25 years both in the community and in prison. Bev has worked for Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust since September 2015 as head of healthcare at Leicester prison, managing primary care and mental health service provision. Following a successful Art Project at HMP Glen Parva, the healthcare team at HMP Leicester have worked alongside Soft Touch Arts to deliver a pilot art project for men with mental health problems. The art group was enjoyed by the participants and gave them the opportunity and an avenue to express themselves in a positive way. This project culminated in an Art Exhibition in both the prison and at SoftTouch Arts in Leicester, with one of the works of art being put forward for the Koestler Awards for prison art.
