k u .co. mind our y think re #IFeelBetterWhen Thank you About HMP Leicester HMP Leicester is a small prison located in the city centre and it serves the local courts of the city and county of Leicestershire and Rutland. The prison was built in 1828 and celebrates its 190th anniversary in 2018 and the ‘turrets’ form a famous landmark on Welford Road and as such the prison is colloquially known as the ‘castle’. We hold a maximum of 411 men but on average have around 330 in the prison at any one time. Due to the size of the prison, activities for the men are limited to a couple of small workshops, a college and gymnasium but we are creative in providing enrichment activities (see below). We directly employ 194 staff of various grades and disciplines, plus a range of partners responsible for Health, Education, Maintenance and Substance Misuse. Our mantra is ‘Doing the Right Thing’ and these are our core values, which all staff adopt in trying to support the men make better choices for themselves. We are keen to promote the prison as part of the community as approximately 61% of the men are from this region - ‘Today’s offenders are tomorrow’s neighbours’. We are keen to provide an expansive regime and this includes various events including art festivals (see below) and / or exhibitions such as WWII or lectures from academics from the Universities including ‘How Leicester City won the league’ to full blown Learning Together concepts involving staff, prisoners and students from the Universities. 102 HMP Leicester     Views from inside the Turrets
